From their domaine in Pommard, the Rebourgeons tend 18 acres, divided between many well regarded holdings in the appellations of Beaune, Volnay and Pommard, planted entirely in Pinot Noir and averaging more than 40 years with the oldest parcels of Pommard planted in 1902. The viticultural and winemaking methods have not changed much in the last five centuries: Responsible farming, manual harvest, and an aim to make elegant wines with ability to age.

Daniel Rebourgeon and his son David own and operate one of the oldest estates in Pommard, started by their ancestor Jean Bourgogne in 1552 who had taken a 99 year lease to raise vines at the holy abbey, Marguerite of Bouillard.

The yield is controlled, and the focus is on the maturation of the grape. All of the grapes are 100% destemmed and inspected in the cellar before going into temperature controlled cement tanks for a 5 day cold pre-fermenatation. The aging is carried out in a cellar underneath the winery in neutral oak barrels for 14 to 18 months, before they are estate bottled.

"Tasted as two components. The first from the lower slopes comprised La Croix Planet, Perrière, and Rue au Port. This was solid and muscular. The second component came from La Vache, Vaumuriens, and Lambots on the hillside, including an experiment with 35% whole bunches. Lighter in colour and with a more ethereal nose, it offers lively dancing fruit here and then some drier tannins behind. The two together will make a special village Pommard." South-Souith East exposure, All of the grapes are 100% destemmed and inspected in the cellar before going into temperature controlled cement tanks for a 5 day cold pre-fermenatation. The aging is carried out in a cellar underneath the winery in oak barrels, no more than 1/3 new oak for 14 to 18 months, before they are estate bottled.

2020 Volnay

Volnay, perched on the hill of Chaignot high up in the Côte de Beaune, occupies a narrow and steeply sloping site as if to allow more space to the vines. The hill itself is oriented slightly differently from the general run of the country so that the vines face South-East rather than East. These vineyards have been valued and exploited for centuries. Long before the Revolution the harvests of Volnay went to the Knights of Malta, the Abbeys of Saint-Andoche d’Autun and Maizières, or to the Dukes of Bourgogne and their successors, the Kings of France.

The oolitic limestone has a superficial similarity to the reddish igneous rock (porphyry) found in the Morvan district. It is pink in color with pale green inclusions and overlain by banks of schist. At the top of the slope, this limestone predominates. Lower down we find white, chalky-textured argovien limestone. Lower still are reddish Bathonien limestone, pebbly and ferruginous. The soils at the foot of the slope are deeper and more gravelly. Altitudes: 230-280 meters.

"Soft-spoken winemaker David Rebourgeon was on hand to guide me through his 2020s, which he picked from August 22 and then over the following week. Unfortunately, his production was 50% down in 2020, and 60% down in 2021, when some of the Premier Cru Volnay bit the dust. Rebourgeon explained to me how his vertical Bucher press was so useful in 2020 in terms of gentle and precise pressing. This was a superb set of wines from one of several growers who are proving Pommard to be one of the fastest-improving appellations in the Côte d'Or. The wines are surfeit with tension and energy and do not short-change in terms of flavor. You'll not find many better Volnay Caillerets or Pommard Grands Epenots than at this address. Rebourgeon is starting to gain a well-deserved reputation, so try to bag what you can given the reduced yields." - Vinous
